Fort Street, E1

Place Name

One of a small cluster of streets commemorating the former Tasel Close Artillery Yard which was here in the 16thCentury on land previously belonging to St Mary Pital priory. When the priory was closed in 1539 the area was used by gunners based at the Tower of London for practice and their weekly repairs. The yards were closed and sold off for property development in 1602. This replaced an earlier Fort Street which ran from west to north east of what is now Spitalfields Market. This road is in fact the remanent of the former Duke Street, which was built from 1682 and named after James, Duke of York.
