Folkes Lane, RM14

Place Name

Originally the northern section of Moor Lane. The name of the lane is relatively modern although it refers to a family who were farming the land in the mid-15thCentury and gave their name to Folkes Farm. Thomas Ffakys or Ffaukes or even Ffawkys is recorded as a tenant farmer of the manor of Bishop’s Ockendon sometime around 1463. By 1510 the property, the largest farmhouse in the parish, was referred to as Ffawkys Farm.
