Fernhall Drive, IG4

PLACE NAME

After the former farmhouse Fern Hall that at one time was owned by Richard Willis, a turkey merchant of the Levant Company. When he went bankrupt in 1778 as a result of disruption to trade cause by the Anglo-French War, he was banished by his creditors to Grenada, in the Caribbean, then a British colony. His run of bad luck continued however, for shortly after arriving the French decided to recapture their former possession which they had surrendered to the British a few years earlier. It was there that he died of his wounds sustained during the siege of Grenada. The street was laid out in the early 20thCentury.
