Place Name

The name of the King of Kent who became the first English king, Æthelberht (c. AD550 – February 24, 616) to convert to Christianity when the Pope sent St Augustine to Britain in AD597. In the late 9thCentury the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle referred to him as a bretwalda, or Britain-ruler. It is one of a cluster of roads named after early powerful figures.
