Essex Court, SW13

Place Name

The historic Milbourne House, that overlooks the village green, is considered to be the oldest house in Barnes. It was known as “Essex Place otherwise Milbourne” or perhaps the other way around on account that it was the home of William Essex towards the end of the 15thCentury. By coincidence 100 years later it was in the hands of Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex, who had leased it from the Crown following the execution of its previous owner for treason. More recently it is known as Essex House.
