Place Name
After the First World War the chronic shortage of working class housing became a priority for many local authorities, especially given the promise of homes fit for heroes. This was one of those residential estates that was developed between the wars, laid out over agricultural land, called Acres, which ran off Dirty Lane. Itself so called because of the sewage farm that it led to. Fortunately, the authorities had the foresight to adopt a more pleasing name – as well as moving the sewage farm. Elmgrove, may have been a reference to a former woodland but there is little evidence of it being there in the period prior to building – instead in common with many developments of the period it was given a rustic-sounding name, meant to attract residents with a suggestion of semi-rurality.
