Elm Grove House which stood near the entrance to Barn Elms and had extensive grounds which went beyond Beverley Brook to Barnes Common. Between 1703 and 1720 the political Kit Cat Club (also The Kit-Cat and Kitcat) moves met here after quitting the Christopher Cat’s Tavern near Temple Bar. From 1826 to 1860 it was the home of a Portuguese diplomat, Baron Alexandre de Sampayo. The road was built in 1896 around the same year that the house was knocked down.
