Place Name
In honour of Edward Harry Temme (September 16, 1904 – June 26, 1977), the first man to swim across the Channel in both directions between the wars, in 1927 and 1934. Temme, an insurance clerk from Plaistow, was also a member of the British Water Polo team and competed at two Olympic Games, at Amsterdam in 1928 and Berlin in 1936. He was a member of the Plaistow United Swimming Club and practised for his marathon challenge at the weekends.
