Ducks Hill Road, HA4

Place Name

Not named after the water fowl but after a William Duck, who lived here in the 16th Century. The land had originally belonged to Thomas Paget, 3rd Baron Paget, but was confiscated from him in 1587 after it was discovered he was involved in a plot against Elizabeth I. With the land now in the Crown’s hands, it was included in the lease of the local manor, then owned by Sir Christopher Hatton. Following Hatton’s death, it was leased again in 1593 to Thomas and William Duck.
