Place Name
The village of Downe, of which this street is named, was first mentioned as Dona in 1283, from the Old English word dūn meaning the hill or down. Over the centuries the spelling changed to Dune in 1296, and Doune in 1316 before taking its contemporary spelling Downe sometime around 1762.
