Place Name

Named after the Battle of the Douro fought on May 12, 1809 at Oporto in Northern Portugal between the British and the Portuguese against the French during the Peninsular War. The allied forces, led by Major General Sir Arthur Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington, won the battle forcing French commander Marshal Soult to retreat.
