Place Name
Named after the Densham family of Methodists who made their fortune in the 19thCentury tea trade. Originally from Plymouth, in Devon, they moved their business, the Mazawattee Tea Company, to London and became large landowners around Croydon. John Boon Densham founded the company in 1887 and one of his sons, Edward, became a well-known figure in Purley, becoming an independent candidate to the new Croydon Rural District Council in 1884 and later chairman for three years.
