Cutler Street, EC3A

Place Name

Named after the Worshipful Company of Cutlers who were left the land, then consisting of cottages and gardens, in a will of 1469. The Company developed the street in 1734 replacing the alleys that had been built up in the intervening years, with names such as Scummer Alley, Woolpack Alley and Woolsack Alley. Originally Cutler Street only applied to the section running south to north from Houndsditch to Devonshire Square, in 1908 the road was extended to include White Street, a footpath that ran to the north east of it.
