Place Name

Named after the Clerks of the Crown Office that used to be based here, it is shown by its present name on John Rocque’s 1746 map of London. This street, situated opposite the Inner Temple Gardens in the heart of the Inns of Court, was where the clerks used to frame indictments (drawing up the charges) from Tudor times until 1882.
