Cross Lane, EC3R

Place Name

Previously called Fowle Lane – meaning foul and unpleasant rather than the bird variety. This was a descriptive name, as it literally cut across from one street to another with seemingly no distinguishing features. It was once a very common name, in 1936 there were 19 of them still in London. Many have now been renamed to avoid confusion.
