Cricket Green, CR4

Place Name

Literal, although the street was previously known as Lower Green East, it was only featured as Cricket Green on maps after the Second World War. The name is in honour of the fact that it is believed to be home to the oldest continuously used cricket green in the world. The game is recorded as having first been played there in 1685. Among those who are said to have been spectators are Admiral Lord Nelson who is said to have travelled from his Merton home to watch the local team. Mitcham Cricket Club Pavilion opened in May 1904.
