A corruption of Christ Church, which was the church of the former Holy Trinity Priory, Aldgate. Gillian Bebbington in London Street Names explained: “In the middle ages Christ was pronounced ‘Chreest’ in the continental manner and shortened to Cree in this instance to avoid the difficult consonant cluster ‘stch’.
