Place Name

Agricultural heritage. Before it was developed this was farmland as recorded by the name Crabbetrehalfacre, meaning a half acre field by a crab-apple tree, mentioned in documents of 1449. Apple wood was burned by the Celts during fertility rites and festivals, and Shakespeare made reference to crab apples in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Love’s Labour Lost.
