Combwell Crescent, SE2

Place Name

Named after Combwell Priory, which was founded as an abbey by Robert de Turneham in the reign of Henry II but in 1220 it was struggling financially and downgraded to a priory. It was suppressed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries and on November 20, 1537 granted to Thomas Culpeper. This road, like many of the surrounding ones, is named after a former religious house in a nod to nearby Lesnes Abbey after which Abbey Wood gets its name.
