Built sometime around 1925, on the grounds of Frederick Wigan’s property Clare Lawn, which he named after his birthplace Clare House, in East Malling, Kent. Wigan, who was a hop merchant in Southwark (his brother James was a brewer and co-owner of Phillips and Wigan brewery, Mortlake), was appointed High Sheriff of Surrey in 1894, and knighted that year. Four years later be became a baronet. He was also the first Treasurer of Southwark Cathedral, having taken a leading part in the formation of Southwark diocese in 1905. Clare Lawn, described as the largest and grandest of East Sheen’s Victorian houses laid out on 11 acres of land, was built for Wigan in 1866 it remained his residence until his death in 1907. The house was pulled down sometime around the construction of the road.

Hello, thank you very much. Yes, quite agree, we’d love to do a lot more with the site but we are concentrating on getting facts – and since we both have full time jobs (sadly not in computing), design and user experience are taking a bit of a backseat for now. But we will get around to it one day!
