Place Name

Originally Church Row, this was part of a longer right of way that led through the fields of Church Shott (so called after a parcel of land) from Richmond Hill via Lancaster Park to St Mary Magdalene Church, Richmond. Sometime around 1725 today’s Nos 1 to 5 Church Terrace were built. More followed when in 1736 a carpenter called Thomas Campion began building houses along the route which were named Church Row in the manorial records. The name continued to be used in the rate books from 1780 to 1851. However, for reasons that aren’t entirely clear the residents demanded a change of name, and so by 1859 the Row became a Terrace
