Place Name
Originally spelt Christ Church Road. Named after the Church of England church on the road, which was built to the designs of Sir Arthur Blomfield, in 1863, following a boom in the local population. The first to contribute to the building of the new church was Queen Victoria. The church was consecrated in January 1864. The road itself was constructed in two parts, from Sheen Lane to Fife Road it had formed an ancient highway leading to Kingston. Charles Hailstone in Alleyways of Mortlake and East Sheen writes: “Had Richmond Park not been made, the lost ‘way to Kingston’ would have developed into an important highway as a direct route to that town.” The section of the road from Fife Road to Sheen Common Drive was built in the 1850s.
