Cherry Hill, EN5

Place Name

Originally named Western Way when it was laid out in 1932 this New Barnet road was meant to have a tunnel running under the railway line to connect with the Western Way on the Grasvenor estate on the other side of the tracks. When it didn’t happen it inevitably caused a great deal of confusion. Local historian Doreen Willcox in her book Barnet’s History in its Street Names explains that by the 1950s it was decided that the name should be changed and the residents chose the rather dull Cherry Hill.
