Sir Francis Legatt Chantrey (April 7, 1781 – November 25, 1841) was a sculptor whose monument to Octavia Lady Ellenborough is in the parish church, St James’s Church, North Cray. Chantrey became the leading portrait sculptor in the Regency era, producing busts and statues of many notable figures of the time. His most notable works include the statues of King George IV, in Trafalgar Square; King George III in Guildhall, and of George Washington in Massachusetts State House. His works also appear in St Paul’s Cathedral. He left the Chantrey Bequest (or Chantrey Fund) for the purchase of works of art for the nation, which was available from 1878 after the death of his widow.
