Commemorates Stamp Brooksbank (1694 – May 25, 1756), an MP and Governor of the Bank of England who was a local landowner. He became a successful merchant trading with Turkey and was a member of the New England Company in 1726. Around this time he built Hackney House, which stood near the South East end of the present Lower Clapton Road. It was demolished in 1880.
