Place Name
Most likely called after the material used to construct the farmhouse that once stood here. Brick Farm and Brick Stables – which from 1823 were also called West Farm and West Lodge – were part of a network of local farms and market gardens with access to the dock on the River Thames. In the mid-19thCentury the farm was worked by the Pouparts of Barnes until from 1881 when it was taken over by the Besant-family. They were the last of the area’s market gardeners, working the land until 1938. In 1966 the farm was replaced with a council estate although part of the name lives on as a private residence called West Farm. This was part of the Leyborne Popham estate.
