Botany Bay Lane, BR7

Place Name

Often used as a popular joke name, it can also be found in Enfield, alluding as it does to the 18thCentury convict settlement in New South Wales, Australia, meaning that it is a far away and remote place. But it has a double meaning in that Thomas Townshend, later to be the 1st Viscount Sydney, (February 1733 – June 1800) inherited the lordship of Chislehurst Manor on the death of his father in 1780. As Home Secretary, Townshend was responsible for plans to send convicts to Botany Bay in Australia. It runs through the Hawkwood Estate.
