Black Friars Lane, EC4V

Place Name

The Dominicans or Black Friars (so-called from the colour of their habits) were a powerful and wealthy order of monks who originally established a monastery in 1221 near Lincoln’s Inn. They moved to this site in 1278 after being granted more land and this lane through the centre of their precinct. It was closed in 1538 during the dissolution of the monasteries.
