Directional. Bexley means a wood or grove of box trees. Box trees used to be prevalent in the south of England. It was first recorded as Bixle sometime around AD780; by the time of the Anglo-Saxon Charter of AD814 it was recorded as Byxlea. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it was simply Bix becoming Bixle in the 12thCentury.
