Place name
Named after suffragist Dr Ethel Bentham (January 5, 1861 – January 19 1931), the MP for Islington East from the May 1929 general election until her death in office. Bentham had first stood in the seat in the 1922 election coming a distant third behind the Unionist and Liberal candidates. By the time of the 1924 election – the third general election in three years – she had overtaken the Liberal candidate who had been the sitting MP following the 1923 election. She died from heart failure following a bout of influenza.
