Bayhurst Drive, HA6

Place Name

This is a reference to the wood of the same name three miles away – and was probably considered a better selling point than Mad Bess Wood which is also nearby. It was first recorded as Baynhurste in the 13thCentury and given its Old English origins probably means the wooded hill of a man called Bæga. The name stuc,  and the wood’s name became Bayhurst in 1522 . and featuring as Bathurst Wood on the Ordnance Survey map of 1822. The street itself was laid out largely on the grounds of a house named Farleigh.
