At the northern end of this lane stood the church of StĀ Bartholomew-by-the-Exchange (the Royal Exchange), which was originally built in the 13thCentury. It was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666, then rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren. The rebuilt church was demolished in 1840.
