Barset Road, SE15

Place Name

Thought to be a reference to Anthony Trollope’s Barsetshire novels, set in rural Victorian Wiltshire – set in a thinly veiled Salisbury. The Last Chronicle of Barset, published in 1867, is the sixth and final book in the Chronicles of Barsetshire series, and came out a decade before this was road was laid out. The novel’s story centres on an impoverished parish priest the Reverend Josiah Crawley who loses a cheque, setting off a chain of events and theories including accusations that he stole it himself. The novel also concludes various storylines from previous books in the series. It was not uncommon for developers to take inspiration from popular novels of the time, possibly to encourage buyers.
