Commemorating the Reverend Canon Samuel Augustus Barnett (February 8, 1844 – June 17, 1913), who was canon at St Jude’s Church, Whitechapel, from 1886, moving to the area with his wife with the intention of improving social conditions in one of London’s worst slums. In 1884 he was instrumental in setting up Toynbee Hall which works to eradicate poverty. He was married to the heiress, social reformer and author, Henrietta Octavia Weston Rowland (1851 – 1936), later Dame Henrietta Barnett.
