Banner Street, EC1Y

Place Name

Thought to be named after a local family of tradespeople who are mentioned in the Middlesex Land Registry records of 1789 as living and owning property in the area, the same year this street was laid out, originally with a square which had dissappeared within a century. Among those featured in the record are Henry Banner, a carpenter; Mary, his wife; and Francis, their son, an upholsterer of Aldersgate Street. Living just around the corner in Whitecross Street was another Banner, John, a plumber.
