Balcaskie Road, SE9

Place Name

Named after Balcaskie, an estate in Fifeshire, that was home to architect Sir William Bruce. Robert Lorimer, an admirer of Bruce, called the house “the ideal of what a Scottish gentleman’s home ought to be”. Many of the roads around Eltham Park are named after places in Scotland, the homeland of its developer Archibald Cameron Corbett, 1st Baron Rowallan, a Scottish Liberal Party and Liberal Unionist Party politician, who being a teetotaller he did not allow any pubs to be built in the area.
