Stephen James Backley (born February 12, 1969) was a former world-record breaking British track and field athlete who competed in the javelin throw. He won four gold medals at the European Championships, three Commonwealth Games gold medals, two silvers and a bronze at the Olympic Games, and two silvers at the World Championships. Originally from Sidcup in Bexley, he competed for the borough in the London Youth Games. In January 1992 he entered the record books with a 91.46 throw in New Zealand, it was a feat that stood until the following year but remains the British record. This road is named, like many on the former brickworks site in Woodside, after British Olympic athletes. The cluster includes Christie Drive, Redgrave Close, Adams Way, Goodhew Road, Akabusi Close, and Coe Avenue.
