Atwoods Alley, TW9

Place Name

Originally Love Lane. This was part of the original boundary footpath of Richmond and Mortlake. Named after the Atwood family, formerly market gardeners in Mortlake. The first Richard Atwood came to the area in 1820. His six sons and two daughters were all born in Brick Farm. So successful was Atwood that by 1837 his gardens included 23 acres owned by General E. W. Leybourne Popham (now Leyborne Park). Atwood Avenue is also named after the family.
