Arthur Atkinson, originally from Nelson in Lancashire, was a motorcycle speedway champion who rode for West Ham Hammers between 1931 and 1939 helping them win a number of honours. The team were based at the West Ham Stadium which was on this site prior to residential development. It is one of a number of nearby streets commemorating the men who took part in the then newly created sport for the Hammers.
