Place Name
Like many of the streets around the Wanstead Slip this was laid out on the Cann Hall manorial estate, which belonged to the Manby-Colegrave family. Many of the road names have a family connection and this one is from the wife of Lieutenant Gerard Thomas Manby-Colegrave, of the Army Service Corps who was killed aged 31 on April 21, 1917. He was also owner of Cann Hall and Lord of the Manor of Little Ellingham. His wife, Hilda Atherton Brown, from Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, was left caring for their son and daughter. The family were living in Westgate, Kent, at the time of his death.
