Athelstan Way, BR5

Place Name

Named after Athelstan the first Anglo-Saxon ruler who was recognised as King of All England. He was crowned King of Wessex and Mercia in Kingston in AD924. Among his victories was the Battle of Brunnanburh where he beat a combined force of Danes, Scots, Welsh and Irish. He died at the age of 44 in AD940. The road was laid out over the former Midfield Secondary School for Girls.
