Commander Neil Armstrong (August 5, 1930 – August 25, 2012) became the first man on the moon on July 20, 1969, as part of the Apollo 11 space mission. After serving as a naval aviator, during which time he saw action in the Korean War, he became a test pilot. In 1962 he was selected by NASA to take part in their space programme.
