Apple Road, E11

Place Name

An area much redeveloped throughout the 20thCentury. This is one of a cluster of streets redeveloped by the Waltham Forest Housing Action Trust in the 1990s on the former Cathall council housing estate, which were named after fruits. As well as Apple Road, there is Melon Road, Orange Grove, Pear Road and Peach Grove, perhaps as a reminder of the area’s agricultural past when it supplied fruit (although unlikely melons and oranges) to London, together with rural estate inspired names Corn Way and Birch Grove. This is approximately where Granville Street would have been.
