Ampleforth Road, SE2

Place Name

Named after Ampleforth Abbey, a monastery of Benedictine Monks in North Yorkshire. This is one of a cluster of roads in the area named after monasteries and priories in a nod to the nearby ruin of Lesnes Abbey. Though unlike many of the religious houses after which nearby roads are named, Ampleforth continues to be in use having only been founded in 1802 by Lady Anne Fairfax.
