Place Name

Tobacconist Isaac Amiel, 59, was a fire watcher during World War Two, who was one of the many victims of the Blitz. Amiel lived at 154 Mile End Road with his wife Mary, was killed during an air raid at 206 Mile End Road on May 10, 1941. After the war Stepney Council decided to commemorate some of those killed in street and building names, they were chosen by lot. Many of the people whose names were chosen were Jewish as the area had a large Jewish community at the time.
