America Street, SE1

Place Name

This was still agricultural land when John Rocque was drawing his 1746 map of London, although development was all around it. As with America Square in the City this is thought to take its name after the traders with North American interests shortly before the American War of Independence. At its eastern end was America Place but that was wiped off the map when Southwark Bridge Road was laid out.
