Alma Row, HA3

Place Name

Named after the first battle of the Crimean War, fought on September 20, 1854 when the allied expeditionary force made up of French, British and Turkish troops were pitted against the Imperial Russian Army defending the Crimean Peninsula. The allied armies which were marching on the port city of Sevastopol had to navigate four rivers. It was on the River Alma that the Russian general, Prince Menshikov, resolved to make his stand. But the Russians were unprepared for the defence and were forced to withdraw to Sevastopol following the allied advance. This great victory for the allied forces proved a popular name for the nation’s developers and pub landlords.
