The road was laid out over a former school’s grounds. According to Origin of Place Names in Peckham and Nunhead by John Beasley, the name was chosen by the developer in 1996 from Southwark Council’s name bank. While some developers and councils take great care about the chosen names of streets others are happy to take off the shelf suggestions that fit street name criteria. Councils keep suggestions from the public as well as councillors to be used for such purposes. Who Ainsworth was, or whether they existed at all, is uncertain.
