Abingdon Street, SW1P

Place Name

James Bertie (June 16, 1653 – May 22, 1699), was the 1st Earl of Abingdon, who owned a house to the west of Dean’s Yard in the 17thCentury. The town house appears to have been in the family (albeit not directly-related) for some time before his ownership, since among its former residents was Mary Abingdon, the sister of Lord Monteagle, whose letter to her brother uncovered the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. This street’s earlier name was recorded as Dirty Lane.
