Henry Bruce (April 16, 1815 – February 25, 1895) , 1st Baron Aberdare, was a Liberal politician who served as the Home Secretary between 1868 and 1873 reforming the licensing laws. It was under his tenure that the Licensing Act 1872, which made the magistrates the licensing authority, increased the penalties for misconduct in public-houses and shortened the number of hours for the sale of drink, was introduced. This road was developed between 1893 and 1897 by Spencer Maryon Wilson, the great-grandson of local landowner Sir Thomas Maryon Wilson, it was the last road in the area to be built and named around the time that Bruce died.
